The ongoing negotiations for a global plastics treaty have underscored the urgent necessity for enhanced recycling strategies. These strategies are essential for advancing a more circular economy, which aims to minimize waste and maximize resources. Enhancing recycling processes and infrastructure can decrease our reliance on new plastic production, which is expected to nearly triple from approximately 460 million tonnes (Mt) in 2019 to 1,231 Mt by 2060. This shift can reduce environmental impact and establish sustainable pathways for plastic materials. Chemical recycling via pyrolysis, or 'advanced recycling,' is a crucial complement to mechanical recycling due to its versatility in handling various plastic waste. This method is particularly noteworthy because it enhances traditional mechanical recycling processes. Mechanical recycling primarily works with clean, uncontaminated plastics. In contrast, pyrolysis offers greater versatility, enabling it to process a wider variety of plastic materials, including complex, multi-layered, and heavily contaminated plastics. Mixed plastic waste feedstocks consist of different types of plastics and non-polymeric materials, which may include fine particles and other contaminants that need to be removed from the oil produced during the process.
The selection of suitable filtration media and coalescer technologies is key at multiple stages of the purification process. Studies carried out by Ghent University have demonstrated Depth filtration to be highly effective in removing harmful contaminants found in pyrolysis oils derived from plastic waste, and ensures that the oils achieve the purity standards required for subsequent processing.
