Organic Materials & Printing

Our filters are ideal for reliable, consistent filtration with very high flow rates and are designed with a high contaminant-holding capacity, leading to best printing quality and repeatability by removing oversized pigments and other agglomerates, organic/bacterial matter, and gelatinous residues.

Optimizing OLED Film Coatings to Increase Yield for Mass Production

Our filtration technology is the next advancement in achieving repeatable film quality in OLED’s. With the help of Pall Technology, manufacturers are able to deliver highly scalable, pattern-wise precision deposition of organic thin films with high material efficiency. In order to successfully have repeatable films, good inkjet equipment and a filtering solution for processable OLED materials.

We have been working to fix the two main challenges that have impeded the adoption of inkjet printing for OLED mass production. First, device performance (color, efficiency, and lifetime) failed to reach the standard required for display commercialization due to intrinsic material limitations and the use of wet processing. Second, inkjet OLED panels suffered from visual non-uniformities, in particular, a type of pattern nonuniformity referred to as ‘mura.’ Mura is caused by imperfect inkjet droplet deposition onto the panel substrate and non-uniform ink drying over the substrate surface. Pall’s effective filtering solutions lead to the best printing quality and repeatability by removing oversized pigments and other agglomerates, organic/bacterial matter, and gelatinous residues. Without removing these contaminants, print and film quality degrades over time and becomes unrepeatable leading to downtime and surface defects.

The intrinsic performance of wet-processed inkjet printable materials has improved dramatically and has reached the level necessary to transition inkjet into mass production due to proper filtration techniques. In addition, progress in inkjet technology has resulted in the demonstration of large-size, uniform, mura-free panels. This progress has made inkjet a realistic near-term solution to enable low-cost mass production of large-size OLED panels. However, the transition from research and development to mass production is difficult, especially for inkjet equipment.
